Art, Community & the Carolina International
This past weekend, I had the honor of serving as the artist in residence at the 2025 Carolina International CCI & HT, an event that feels more like a family reunion than a competition. From the moment I arrived, I was reminded of what makes this event so special—the people, the horses, and the unwavering support of a community that comes together each year to celebrate the sport we love.
Painting the Spirit of Eventing
Throughout the weekend, I painted a series of three portraits capturing Liz Halliday in each phase of eventing—dressage, show jumping, and cross-country. Though Liz couldn't be there in person this year, her presence was felt through the support of the eventing community. These paintings, created as each phase unfolded, were auctioned to benefit the Carolina Horse Park, our world-class nonprofit equestrian venue.
It was an incredible experience to paint in real-time, surrounded by the energy of the competition. The elegance of dressage, the precision of show jumping, and the bold determination of cross-country all provided endless inspiration. Each brushstroke was a reflection of the heart and grit that define eventing, and I was honored to capture those moments on canvas.
A Community Like No Other
One of the best parts of the Carolina International is the people. Every year, this event brings together riders, trainers, owners, and supporters from across the country, creating an atmosphere that is both electric and deeply familiar. Seeing familiar faces—some of whom I only get to reconnect with once a year—made this weekend even more special. The generosity and kindness of the eventing world never cease to amaze me, and I’m incredibly grateful for the connections I’ve made through this sport.
The Carolina Horse Park team, as always, went above and beyond to create an event that felt welcoming, seamless, and truly world-class. Their sense of hospitality is ingrained in every detail, making the show an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.
Gratitude and Looking Ahead
As I pack up my brushes and reflect on the weekend, I’m filled with gratitude—for the opportunity to create, for the friendships I’ve built, and for the chance to give back to a place that means so much to our community. The Carolina International is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of equestrian sport, horses, and the people who make it all possible.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by to watch the paintings come to life, shared words of encouragement, or placed a bid in the auction. Your support means the world, and I can’t wait to return next year!
Until then—keep riding, keep dreaming big dreams, and take the leap in pursuit of your passions.
